A Typical Approach to Design and Analysis of Foldable Bicycle

Today, due to time shortage and stressful life, people give least importance to exercise and body fitness. To cope with time deficit, bicycle is utilized, but regular bicycles occupy lots of space to park and are not easy to carry around. To overcome these problems faced by the society, an idea is conceptualized to design a foldable bicycle. The main idea of the study is to provide a foldable bicycle which is light and sleek, yet rigid and safe and easy to handle and maintain. A market survey is done to find out the availability of the frame material. Design is developed in SolidWorks 2015 in a HP computer with specifications such as Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1, RAM 4GB, Processor-Intel i3 4th generation, 64-bit. The proposed design is developed using IS code. A systematic analysis on the relationship between material properties and design for folding bicycle has been studied in STAAD pro V8i, series 4. The techniques applied under present investigation will definitely help the rider in his daily life.

 
 

Before the automotive era arrived, the main transportation was bicycle. It has evolved and is improving in so many ways from the invention of safety bike, the discovery of pneumatic tire, development of recumbent bicycle and innovation of folding bicycle. The folding bicycle still is regarded as new technology. Generally, folding bicycle or folder is a type of bicycle that incorporates hinges or joints in the frame and handlebar stem that permit it to be broken down into a more compact size. Figure 1 shows a comprehensive design that has been done by some researchers which includes handlebar, down tube, seat and other components of the folding bicycle (Maleque et al., 2011).

A bicycle, often called a bike or cycle, is a human-powered, pedal-driven, single-track vehicle, having two wheels attached to a frame, one behind the other. A folding bicycle is a bicycle designed to fold into a compact form, facilitating transport and storage. When folded, the bikes can be more easily carried into buildings, on public transportation and more easily stored in compact living quarters or aboard a car, boat or plane. Folding mechanisms vary, with each offering a distinct combination of folding speed, folding ease, compactness, ride, weight, durability and price. Distinguished by the complexities of their folding mechanism, more demanding structural requirements, greater number of parts and more specialized market appeal, folding bikes may be more expensive than comparable non-folding models. The choice of model, apart from cost considerations, is a matter of resolving the various practical requirements: a quick easy fold, a compact folded size, or a faster but less compact model.
