LEADERSHIP Effective
leadership : A narrative research endeavor related to long-term organizational
success
- - Dr. Paul B Carr and Dr. Michael Hartsfield
Effective
leadership is a topic of paramount importance for today's global CEO. The construct
of leadership is an elusive entity in its own right; however, the commingled construct
becomes practically intangible when in concert with the construct of how one leads
in an effective manner. This endeavor began as an inquiry about not only leadership
but effective leadership with a focus on long-term organizational success. One
premise of this endeavor was to refrain from operationally defining the construct
for the reader but to provide the perspectives of current CEOs, company owners,
workers, and leadership students alike so the reader may utilize the information
and operationally define the construct for himself and apply the perspectives
accordingly.

LEADERSHIP
Result-orientation
and effective leadership
- - Dilip Dasgupta
Contrary
to popular belief, effective leaders need not represent any stereotype like being
a great orator or having a charismatic personality. Rather than possessing certain
traits, those who do certain things right, tend to achieve great success as leaders.
It calls for a strong result-oriented approach, strategic thinking, implementation
of shared decisions by involving people at all stages and by sharing credit, but
not the blame. Successful leaders study the environment, scan it for opportunities
and persuade those who are going to be affected by the proposed changes that it
is both in their own and their organization's interests to adopt what they are
suggesting. They handle `people issues' with sensitivity.

COACHING Executive
coaching as a method of top executive development
- - Dr. Myra E Dingman and Dr. Sergio Matviuk
Executive
coaching has emerged as a successful leadership and executive development method.
Companies make important investments to buy executive coaching services, hence
the number of executive coaches has grown exponentially around the world. However,
executive coaching is not the magic solution for all leadership and executive
development needs of an organization. It is effective when a proven executive
coaching process is followed and implemented to respond to executives' complex
organizational, personal and professional situations, and when integrated into
traditional methods of leadership and executive education.

MANAGEMENT STRATEGY Change
management : Strategies for effective leaders
- - A Venkata Subramanian
Change
is a fact of life in the current competitive and dynamic business world. It is
a complex process and is prone to high rate of failure. Effective leaders are
those who can develop proactive and innovative approaches to succeed in change
management. They should understand the drivers of failure in the area of change
management, handle both the `people' and `process' sides of change, develop suitable
`situational' leadership styles and aim at transforming their organizations from
`static' to `learning' organizations so that they can overcome resistance to change
effectively.

Like in mythologies, in businesses too, the fancy for superheroes has been
prevalent for long. However, the heroics of the likes of GE's Jack Welch would
be rare to happen.

REVIEW Business
Strategies in Transition Economies
- - Author : Michael W Pen Reviewed by Dr. V S Pai and Sanjit Kumar Roy
This
treatise provides a snapshot of the evolution of socialism in transition economies-former
socialist countries of East Asia, Eastern and Central Europe, and the relatively
newly formed independent states of Soviet Union-along with the characteristics
of their transition. Based on his research, the author proposes a new firm-centric
perspective, which has certain advantages like stimulation of competition among
the firms and readiness to respond to any change in the environment. It connects
state-level policies such as liberalization and privatization with individual-level
management decisions like restructuring and networking, thus creating a critical
macro-micro link. This thought-provoking work will prove to be a valuable tool
for both academics and business executives who want to operate in the uncertain
emerging territories.
