Role perception of employees at workplace plays a vital role in their performance, which in turn enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization. The absence of a defined role of the employees and ambiguity in the perception of their roles would result in underutilization of their job potential. As a result, the organization fails to realize and achieve the slated objectives, making it difficult to survive and develop in the ever-growing competitive environment. Role perception has different dimensions and several factors which influence the perception of employees. This article, with the help of a case study, discusses the concept of perception, its process, and its implications in the organization. Appropriate organizational interventions to be adopted by the organizations to enhance the employees' role perception are also outlined.

The role perception is the main concept in understanding the integration of an individual to a system. The effectiveness of an employee depends on his/her own potential effectiveness as a person, his/her technical competence and experience, etc., as well as on the perception of role he/she occupies in the organization. It is the role perception through which an employee interacts and motivates with and gets or does not get integrated with the organization. The integration of the employee and the role happens only when he/she is able to fulfill his/her needs besides contributing to the realization of organizational objectives and goals. If the role does not allow the employees to use their competence, and if they constantly feel frustrated by their role, their effectiveness is likely to be low. Therefore, role understanding and perception by the employees in the right perspective have a strong bearing on the attitude and behavior of the employees shown towards the organization and its objectives. It, in turn, would have direct impact on the efficiency and effectiveness, visibility and reputation of the organization. It is a considered opinion that the absence of defined role of employees and less clarity in perception of their roles would result in the underperformance and underutilization of employees and their job potential vis-à-vis organizations. If the organization fails to realize and achieve the objectives, it would be very difficult for it to survive and develop in the ever-growing competitive environment and fast changing world scenario.
