Blog is not a brand new concept, but is in vogue since the advent of the Internet. Though it is in the introductory stage of its life cycle, there has been a phenomenal growth in the recent past. This article throws light on this emerging concept, its evolution and its purpose. It also analyzes various types of blogs, and finds out specific advantages and emerging threats to the same.

 
 
 

Blog is a web-based tool that has emerged out of the recent technological revolution. It is being increasingly used by many to inform, educate, promote, inspire and entertain the target group of people through Web. In recent years, it has totally changed the way information flows, be it an invasion of Iraq by the US or helping the victims of Tsunami or educating the public on organ donation or criticizing the recent incidents in the Indian Parliament. It is considered as the most effective medium to air one's views and share one's feelings and emotions with similar groups of people on various issues across the globe. Even though the blog is in its infant stage of its life cycle, there is a phenomenal growth in the recent past. According to the blog search engine, `Technorati', there are more than 112 million blogs on the net as of December 2007.

A blog is a Web journal, an online diary or weblog that records online stories, interests and daily life which is made available on the Internet/Web to any individual. In other words, blog is a website that usually contains text, images, media objects and data, which are arranged in a reverse chronological order that can be accessible to any Internet user and maintained by an individual. It is alternatively called as `Web log' or `weblog'.
