Post-nationalization banks have expanded their branches and business aggressively. However, only during the last two to three years retail assets gained focus. Canara Bank is setting excellent standards in the realm of retail banking.

Indian Banks are not new to retail banking. In fact, most banks like Canara Bank, which were established in the country during the early part of the 20th century, started off as retail banking outfits serving individuals, small traders and small enterprises. In those days, such distinctions like retail and wholesale were not made in banking as we do it today. However, branch banking continues to remain the bedrock of retail or consumer banking as always. The phenomenal expansion of branch network which took place in the post-nationalization era gave big push to the activity of Indian banks and retail banking also expanded alongside because retail banking thrives with branch expansion. However, the expansion was mostly on the liability side. Only during the last two to three years, equal focus is gained by the retail assets.
