Jeffrey Immelt took over as the CEO and Chairman of the world's most admired and respected company two years ago. What are GE's prospects under his leadership?

Jack Welch, the charismaticleader of GE, passed on the mantle to Jeffrey Immelt in September 2001, just days before the fateful terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC). Immelt became the 9th CEO in the 128--year history of the company that operates in over 100 countries and employs 3,15,000 people. His job was anything but simple. He had the responsibility to take off where Welch left and to lead the company, a mammoth $129.9 bn company in 2000, to newer heights. Even as he was celebrating his new promotion, Immelt was painfully aware that he was stepping into the shoes of one of the most successful CEOs of the century. And his performance would constantly be compared to that of Jack Welch. Investors, shareholders and consumers too were aware of the fact. It would not be easy to emulate the results of Welch, and to carve a niche for himself would be even tougher.
