Biostadt India Ltd., a part of the Wockhardt Group in India, was initiated in 1986. Biostadt now has a wide portfolio and an impressive growth rate.

Biostadt India Ltd. was initiated in 1986, as a modest venture in the area of seaweed-based fertilizers, a technology acquired from the US by the Wockhardt Group in India. Biostadt is a part of the $300 mn Wockhardt Group. The Wockhardt Group is amongst the leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies globally, and Wockhardt Pharmaceuticals is the fifth largest pharmaceutical company in India. The Group specializes in the manufacture and distribution of generic drugs. In 1986, Wockhardt diversified into agriculture-input segment with Biozyme a biotechnology-based product in India. This was the Wockhardt Group's foray into the agriculture segment in India.

In 1987, Wockhardt started its first factory in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, and by 1993 the company had entered the Chemical pesticides business. In 1995, the company won the DST (Department of Science and Technology) award from the Government of India for creating a breakthrough with the launch of India's first biopesticide. The product was called HALT. Then in 2002, Wockhardt entered the seeds market in India through the launch of HI-Q seeds. In 2003, Biostadt India demerged from Wockhardt, its parent company and was established as an independent entity. Biostadt also set up offices in Thailand and Philippines.
