The traditional methods of career management are undergoing drastic changes. Different segments of businesses are experiencing these changes at different rates.

Today's knowledge professionals distinguish the traditional workforce in many ways. The demand for these people is ever-increasing against the ever-decreasing supply. To build a successful career, they are redefining the relationship between work and life and the gap between these two is forever blurring. In the process, though the workforce has changed, the workplace has not. To meet the increasing demands of the new workplace, companies are responding by making incremental changes. However, the increasing convergence of workforce trends like lots and subplots demands more significant structural changes.

The workplace in today's knowledge era is radically different place and the knowledge workers are self-reliant, able to cope with constant change and maintain a balance between their work and personal life. Accordingly, today's business environment also requires a new approach to career development. Career is increasingly being seen as a continuous process of learning and development. Today, work is defined not only by occupational titles or categories, but also by skills and values.

As a result, effective career builders should know how to shape and build their career. To thrive, they have to specialize in in-demand skills, be aware of their value to specific employers, and be able to market themselves effectively. However, this demands a high-level of self-knowledge and self-confidence, both of which are career management skills. One needs to be aware of the following terms as to how global career management is undergoing a paradigm shift from the traditional methods. The change is occurring at different rates in different regions and sectors of society.
