An organization controls the projects by adopting a systematic approach to figure out whether they are delivering the desired output. Writers of management literature prefer the word `coordinating' to `controlling' because the word `control' may give a negative connotation, i.e., it can imply coercion, force and heavy-handedness. The coordination depicts that through proper communication a goal or target is set, milestones are defined and it is decided whether the desired outcome is achieved. Irrespective of the utilization of the word, control or coordinate, it is important that organizations need to monitor their projects' progress.

As the knowledge economy dawns on us management ideas and concepts are also moving towards implementing user-friendly systems. There has been a great debate on whether to call it as control or coordinate. This article emphasizes on the role of controlling projects, their parameters and activities.

Controlling ensures that the project is delivered under the constraints of resources and costs. Even though a project is well organized and carefully planned, it has to be controlled effectively. Monitoring a project continuously and taking corrective actions when required can protect the project from possible failure. Success of a project does not depend merely upon the right tools and techniques, though these are essential.

Organizing projects means building and motivating the project team and adopting such a flexible management framework that adapts to the needs of each project. Defining projects ensures that the intentions are clearly conveyed to the project team as well to the stakeholders. The progress of the work against the plan should be accurately monitored from the beginning of the project so that any deviation may be identified as soon as possible.
