The success of any organization depends largely on its workforce. At present, the HR professionals have recognized that core competency lies in the employees they hire, who ultimately deliver value to the organization.

Recruitment is a basic func tion in a Human Resource Management (HRM) and it is an important part of an organization's human resource planning which represents the competitive strength of a company. It is a process where in a right person has to be appointed at a right place at the right time in a right number. A productive employee is deemed to be an asset for an organization, whereas any amount spent on an unproductive employee adds to the loss.

Recruiting the right candidate for a right job is very essential, be it for a junior position or top management position. Placing the candidate at the right position is a very important decision that has to be made by the management. For example, if a highly skilled person is placed at a lower level with a less skilled boss, he will always remain dissatisfied and may not remain loyal to the company. He would always look for an opportunity to switch on to some other competitor. Therefore selecting the best candidate is a crucial element for any organization.

Earlier many companies followed the traditional system of recruitment which depends mainly upon the receipt of applications sourced from the company employees' children. The application contained a column which required the prospective candidate to state whether he/she has any relative work experience in an organization. At present the need of a modern organization is technologically relevant and they scout for bright candidates across the globe.

According to Edwin B Flippo, "Recruitment is the process of searching the candidates for employment and stimulating them to apply for jobs in the organization". It is basically considered to be the activity that links the employers and the job seekers.
