This article covers the different benefits of service-learning and its impact on students, teachers, other stakeholders and the community. It throws light on the actual implementation by the teachers, management and community, the impediments in the entire process and how one can overcome these. It also talks about priming and fine-tuning a student's behavior, attitude, communication and critical thinking in his approach not only as a professional but also as a socially responsible human being.

Service-learning is a concept that integrates practical aspects of community needs with theoretical knowledge being imparted in the classroom. There is a very fine blend of theory and practicals, which makes the student receptive to the changes and dynamics around him. The concept of service-learning can be applied to all areas of study, irrespective of disciplines and can go a long way in promoting an altruistic feeling among students making them more receptive to changes happening around them. The ability to respond spontaneously to changes operating in society is an unsaid gain that the students develop through the service-learning process. Service-learning can be taken up in education, environment and public safety to make the students more perceptive and insight-driven.

Involving oneself in the service-learning process encourages the student to start reflecting on the entire process. Critical thinking is fostered by this method while cause and effect relationships are better understood. It involves the ability of the student to discern correctly without passing outright judgments. Once the student goes through the complete process, he is able to empathize with people whom he is associated with. He is able to understand their problems, thinking, reactions and most importantly their needs. This alone ensures his willingness to tackle newer problems more effectively.
