This article deals with the challenges and opportunities in the Indian banking industry in the post globalization era. Over the last two decades, several reforms have taken place within the banking sector. As a result, the organizational models as well as practices, procedures and systems have been redefined completely. The focus of the industry is now on HR issues and challenges. Issues like human resource risks, empowerment and motivation, rewards and recognition, job description, employee turnover, manpower planning and lateral recruitment have been discussed in this article. Also, observations of distinguished banking practioners on human resource issues and challenges have been discussed.

 
 
 

Human Resource Management refers to planning, organizing, directing, and controlling of human resource. It also refers to the integration, maintenance and separation of human resources to the end. This ultimately leads to the accomplishment of individual, organizational and social objectives. The fast global and technological developments in today's business environment are quite complex. As a result, organizations are seeking newer ways to promote their adaptability to the complexities of the changed scenario. Globally, organizations are aiming to become competitive through strategic human resource management. Today, people management has become more important than before. In the process, new themes are emerging and replacing the older ones.

A Human Resource Management (HRM) is increasing gaining in importance. HRM critically influences business strategy and in many situations, it is intimately intertwined with business strategy. In India, organizations wishing to excel in the global arena are trying to weave HR into their vision statement. Until the early 1990s, payroll, staffing and employee welfare were considered to be mundane activities of HR. However, this trend has changed in the post globalization era and the rules of the game are changing radically.
