Management entails ‘getting things done through others’. However, it is not as easy as it sounds in the modern era, where we find people moving on the path of success using unfair means like corruption, red tapism, bribes, etc. It is hard to survive as there is a growing tendency to ignore values in the pursuit of material prosperity. Despite this, India is one of the few civilizations that have held on to its unbroken continuity of ethos and values. The continuous following of Indian traditions and values is helping India grow by leaps and bounds. Our ethos and values, derived from the Vedas, the Ramayana, the Upanishads and the Mahabharata, are still relevant even after thousands of years of their composition. Our philosophers were great managers of time and it is their values that act as a guide for excellence in governance and management in different areas.

India is one of the few civilizations, which have the largest history of unbroken continuity of culture, traditions and ethos. What is the source of strength that sustained the Indian civilization and made it survive over 6,000 years, despite many onslaughts?

Greece also had a rich history, but where is the Greek culture with all its Gods and Goddesses? All are gone! The same is true with the cultures of Rome and Egypt. While in India, even after thousands of years, the same Vedic hymns are chanted in the same tune. The Indian ethos with some external values helps the great Indian culture survive.

Management is not new to Indians. Ancient India was one of the leading countries in the world, in production and trade. The Mahabharata and Kautilya's Arthashastra discussed the management of the state in detail. Moreover, Buddha, Guru Gobind Singh, Shankaracharya, Swami Viveka-nanda and other spiritual leaders were great organizers. Our managers should remember this great heritage and base their role as managers on the Indian philosophy.
