Today, corporate `e-mails' are considered to be a source of knowledge or information and essential for addressing compliance and legal disclosure. Management of e-mails has, therefore, assumed greater importance across the corporate world. Precisely, corporate e-mail management forms a category of enterprise content or knowledge management practice to facilitate efficient storage, retention, security, retrieval and mining of e-mails across the enterprise.

 
 
 

Global and connected economy has enhanced the need for managing business affairs virtually. `Communication' and `collaboration' have, therefore, emerged crucial for efficient operation of organizations. At present, various revolutionary forms of communication such as SMS text messaging, instant messaging, etc., have stepped in. Electronic mail (or simply e-mail) has been under usage widely for more than a decade within corporate globally as it offers the fastest and most efficient way of communication.

A majority of the corporate communication now is carried through electronic mail. In 2004, Meta Group reported that 80% of the executives claimed `e-mail' as the preferred medium for corporate communication. Moreover, the global industry has considered e-mail-based communication as a valid method for correspondence in all business functions. Besides, e-mail correspondences are also considered legal and knowledge documents for several business purposes.

E-Mail management is a category of content or knowledge management practice. Generally, e-mail management is viewed just as the storage of both inbound and outbound e-mails. Most of us, yet, tend to store or archive inbound e-mails only. Archiving outgoing e-mails is a very rare practice for many. Further, the users or organizations did not pay much attention to the organized storage of the e-mails received or sent.
