Abstract
Change affects people differently, sometimes in unproductive ways. Recognize the unproductive reactions to change and effectively help people through change.
Description
Disengagement
Disengagement occurs when an individual reacts to the change issue by losing interest and initiative. It may be that the individual perceives both a positive and negative outcome with implementing the change; therefore, he or she decides to do nothing. People experiencing disengagement still put in their time at work, but do not put the energy or drive into their jobs that they once did. Disengaged employees often mask their loss of commitment and adopt a ‘no problem’ attitude. Behind this facade, however, is an employee who has ‘quit and stayed’.
The disengaged employee is putting in his/her time but has lost interest and initiative in the job. It is important that you approach or confront the disengaged employee — you cannot expect him/her to come to you. Then you will need to identify the areas of employee concern.
