The merger between GE and Honeywell if complete would be the largest industrial merger ever. The deal almost went through but for the final hurdle. European commission blocked the deal sighting that the merger would hamper competition in Europe.

If the merger between GE and Honeywell go ahead it would not only be the largest industrial merger but also a grand finale to the career of one of the most admired and well known corporate leaders of our times - Jack Welch. In fact he postponed his retirement by eight months to win Honeywell's approval of his last minute trumping of a bid from United Technologies (UTC), another American electronics and engineering group.

The landmark merger had almost taken off but for its final hurdle. The European Commission's antitrust team led by Mario Monti derailed the merger having got the conditional clearance from the American regulatory agency the US Department of Justice.
