Pakistan has fought four wars with India and the proxy war has been going on for a long time. It is being done with a view to destabilize India's peace initiatives. The Lahore bus trip was a historic ride in search of peace, but Pakistan did not respond in the same manner.
The same process of India and Pakistan meeting to disperse with a hope of meeting again took place recently, when the 3-in-1 leader of Pakistan visited New Delhi on July 16, 2001.How long will the people of this region have to suffer and live with the idiosyncrasies of their so called leaders. It is said that the people get the government they deserve and it is applicable to people of both the countries. Does the people of the subcontinent deserve such a situation as it exists today? Who is responsible for this impasse?
As pointed out in these columns in the previous issue, both the countries have always met at the negotiating table after a war and the Agra summit came after the Kargil war. Pakistan has fought four wars with India and the proxy war has been going on for more than two decades. It is being done with a view to destabilize India's peace initiatives. The Lahore bus trip was a historic ride in search of peace, but Pakistan did not respond in the same manner. In spite of Kargil, India did not end its peace initiatives. It was hoped that the cease-fire would reduce violence and provide some relief to the people of Kashmir. Only the Indian Army maintained the cease-fire. Peace still eludes the subcontinent. India even took the bold initiative to declare a unilateral cease-fire as India realizes that wars alone cannot solve a problem nor do they end terrorism. However, India had to withdraw the cease-fire. The cease-fire had not produced the kind of results the government had expected. Is it not naive to believe that Pakistan - the source of all terrorist activities in India - could really be able to contain terrorism? Still India gave an opportunity to Pakistan to respond in a positive manner. The Indian government expected the Pakistani side to respond positively to the cease-fire. The government trusted that Musharraf would be able to contain the overzealous terrorist forces within Pakistan.
