With the number of hospitals and physicians in the Indian healthcare industry gradually going up, the need to monitor the healthcare standards is increasingly felt. The quality standards and hygienic conditions in these hospitals are of utmost importance and need supervision. Considering that the country is becoming a medical tourism hub, recognition from foreign accreditation bodies will certainly add to the credit of the Indian hospitals. In this regard, Indraprastha Apollo Hospital and Wockhardt Hospitals have provided the much needed breakthrough and have received accreditation for the first time from Joint Commission International (JCI), USA.
The JCI seal is the golden standard in global healthcare standards and is thus the most coveted accreditation for corporate hospitals in India. The JCI seal analyzes all aspects and processes of a hospital-right from a patient's entry into the hospital up to his discharge, to all facets of management. Anne Marie Moncure, Managing Director, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, says, "The process to accreditation is a multi-pronged approach, which requires inputs and participation of the entire hospital staff to make it possible."
While Indraprastha Apollo Hospital got the JCI approval for its general multi-specialty hospital, Wockhardt received the JCI accreditation for its super-specialty hospital. With this approval, Wockhardt joins the exclusive global list of 71 hospitals that have been successful in getting the JCI's clinical quality standards. Moncure avers, "Indian healthcare industry made a huge leap when Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi got the JCI accreditation in June 2005. It can be said that with JCI accreditation, the bar for standards in hospitals went up a few notches and now matches with the best of facilities the world over."
