The success of the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM) in industry has motivated many educators in recent times to implement it in academics. Educators believe that TQM can provide guiding principles in reforming education. Today, its successful application in academics is a fact and accepted worldwide in education reformation. This article discusses the advantages of TQM in education and the process of its implementation.

Education has come a long way in India from the traditional Gurukul system. There have been both positive and negative developments from the time Lord Macaulay brought in the British English Language system almost two centuries ago. And, today, lot of changes have taken place in the field of education. Einstein once said, "The only thing that interferes with my learning is my education." Transforming moribund systems of education into creative engines of learning requires a shift from passive learning to methods that engage, energize and liberate children and teachers. The teaching-learning process has undergone many changes over the years, with educators developing various models. Today, after its huge success in industry, educators and academicians are now talking about its application in the field of education.

W Edwards Deming, an American, developed the concept of TQM, which has wide application in the area of management. It was aimed to improve the quality of goods and services after World War II. It was developed in the US, but it was not taken seriously by Americans until the Japanese, who adopted it in 1950 to resurrect their post-war business and industry, used it to dominate world markets by 1980. By then most US manufacturers had finally accepted that the nineteenth century assembly line factory model was outdated for the modern global economic markets.
