Gone are the days when people used to enjoy a sense of career security by being proficient in their chosen area of excellence. One used to be called an expert and it used to be sufficient if he or she was performing in their domain to fulfill the job/performance requirements.

With the advancement of technology and onset of globalization and economic reforms, the job responsibilities have drastically changed. The present scenario calls for heads who are proficient and skillful in more than one area or domain. In fact the roots for this transformation lie from the times of Y2K problem.

Once the Y2K bubble evaporated into thin air, a lot of jobs went for a toss in the US in particular. Many people who went there riding on the boom of Y2K as programmers were sent back to their respective countries in the aftermath. People/professionals who were multi-skilled were retained and the so-called specialists were removed from their jobs.In simple terminology and for preliminary understanding, multitasking means the ability to perform more than one task or job at the same time. To do this effectively one needs to be obviously skilled in several dimensions. In computer parlance, UNIX designed as a `single user' operating system in the 1970s, included most of the multitasking capabilities of its multi-user cousin MULTIX, and is today used for both purposes. UNIX was very briefly a single user system, but got both multi-user and multitasking features very early.
