Employee Engagement is the new buzzword. A business success is directly linked to the commitment of the employees. Organizations that constantly keep themselves aware of their employees needs with the help of employee satisfaction surveys will have a competitive advantage over those who dont. In a nutshell, successful companies are those that recognize opportunities to foster employee engagement.

 
 
 

In today's rapidly changing business scenario, one of the toughest challenges that business leaders face is sustaining a high level of performance over the long term and obtaining superior business results. As the number of projects continues to increase, resource-constrained business companies need more than just a pill of extra effort. They need to ratchet up to a higher level of sustainable performance over the long term.

"People are our most important asset" is one of the oldest aphorisms in business. Since the beginning of "scientific management," researchers have been struggling to understand how the aspects of human relations in the workplace affect the bottom line. Advances in the past decade and the ways in which we work have changed pretty dramatically. A survey conducted by Gallup1 points that on an average only 20% of the people in a team are fully engaged and passionate about their work. This presents a huge opportunity in potential productive power waiting to be harnessed and exploited. So, how can one tap this 80% of potential? What can one do to scale up performance in the short term, and more importantly, sustain it over the long term? The answer lies in, `Employee Engagement.'

Employee engagement is defined as the level of commitment and involvement an employee has towards his organization and its values2. It is also defined as a positive, two-way relationship between employees and their organization. Both parties are aware of their own and the other's needs, and the way they support each other to fulfill these needs. Engaged employees and organizations will `go the extra mile' for each other, because they see the mutual benefits of investing in their relationship.
