The only way for an organization to succeed in today's competitive environment is for it to help its employees achieve high performance. This article focuses on a manager's most significant job of creating an environment that motivates and develops people to perform their best for the accomplishment of organizational goals.

In today's competitive environment, an organization can succeed if it has the ability to ensure that employees' activities and outputs match organization's objectives. It can be done by establishing a process known as performance management through which the performance of the staff can be measured, monitored and enhanced. The first step in performance management is concerned with planning the performance and development of an employee. It includes establishing and understanding what is to be accomplished by an employee on his job that contributes to the organization's success as well as to his individual development.

The next step involves accurate measurement of his performance and comparing the same with desired outcomes. The final step is providing feedback to the employee in identifying the problems if any pertaining to his performance and help him to plan how to correct or resolve those problems. According to Susan Heathfield, a management consultant, performance management is a process of creating a work environment that stimulates people to perform to the best of their abilities rather than imposing tight controls as many managers believe.

An effective performance management system will enable an organization to meet three broad purposes: strategic, administrative and developmental. From the strategic perspective, performance management can help the organization in achieving business objectives by aligning employee activities with its vision and mission. It is a systematic way of defining and communicating what the organization is expecting from each employee in terms of performance.
