Indian chemical industry possesses a well-built and diversified base with its operations in many areas such as pharmaceuticals, insecticides and pesticides, and paints. The growth rate of this industry is comparatively higher than all other manufacturing sectors in India. This industry is labor-intensive and therefore human resource is a vital aspect of this industry. This study basically aims at understanding the focus of top level management towards people orientation in Indian chemical industry. A computerized content analysis of the annual reports of top 20 companies from Indian chemical industry has been done in order to generate codes, categories, and finally themes which bring out the focus of top level management towards people orientation.
Indian chemical industry is one of the major sectors playing a crucial role in shaping the economic scene of the country. The globalization phenomenon facilitated the free movement of all the basic resources from one country to another throughout the world. We are also witnessing the post-liberalization period characterized by intense global competition where different stakeholders are forcing the organizations to match the western practice by scaling back the scope of their business activities. Quality human resource ensures core competence for an organization so that it can enjoy sustainable competitive advantage over competitors in the long-term. India is a labor-intensive country, and chemical industry is one which provides employment to the vast chunk of population. This study talks about drawing the focus of the strategic decision maker towards people (HR) in the organization by using computerized content analysis.
