National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd. is a Schedule `A' Enterprise of the Government of India with an authorized share capital of Rs.15,000 cr and an investment base of over Rs. 20,000 cr. Established in 1975, in its existence of less than 30 years, NHPC has become a major organization for hydro power development in India, with capabilities to undertake all the activities from "concept to commissioning" in relation to setting up of hydro projects. NHPC has ISO-9001 for its quality management system and ISO-14001 for environment standard in Corporate Office. NHPC has got nine commissioned power stations with total installed capacity of 3475 MW, which includes 1000 MW of Indira Sagar Project. Power generated at these power stations is supplied to 24 states/union territory. Narmada Hydroelectric development Corporation (NHDC), a joint venture company of NHPC and the Government of Madhya Pradesh is implementing a 1000 MW Indira Sagar Project and a 520 MW Omkareshwar Project in Madhya Pradesh. NHDC has reduced the project cost and power tariff as well by commissioning all 8 units of 125 MW each of Indira Sagar Project ahead of schedule while the project was pending at the implementation stage for about long 20 years. NHPC has also commissioned other projects in India and abroad ahead of schedule. It has also commissioned 14.1 MW Devighat Project in Nepal and 60 MW Kurichu Project in Bhutan. Construction activities on nine projects of 4842 MW combined capacity including 520 MW under implementation by NHDC are in full swing. NHPC has planned to add 4357 MW during the 10th plan period. Eight projects of 2570 MW are awaiting clearances/government approval for their implementation. Detailed project reports are being prepared for 11 projects of 11620 MW and 3 projects of 11024 MW are at the survey and investigation stage. NHPC has been a profit earning organization since becoming operational with profits showing an upward trend. The net profit after tax during the year 2003-04 has been Rs. 621.38 cr with a sales turnover of Rs.1,414.43 cr. In terms of the performance as per an MOU signed with the Ministry of Power, the corporation has been achieving excellent ratings. The Planning Commission has approved a total outlay of Rs. 32,226 cr for NHPC during the 10th five year plan, highest ever allocation of NHPC for five year plan which includes an equity component of Rs. 14,200 cr. NHPC has been assigned the highest rating `AAA' (ind) by Fitch ratings for domestic borrowings and Sovereign rating for external borrowings by Fitch ratings and S&P. NHPC has been generating revenue by its consultancy service to clients both in public and private sector in India and abroad. Its consultancy division acts as a business window by identifying opportunities for consultancy assignments/new projects /joint ventures/MOUs, preparing commercial proposals/bids, execution and coordination of ongoing assignments. NHPC offers services in various fields of hydro power, e.g., investigations, design and engineering, geophysical and geotechnical studies, hydraulic transient studies, hydrological studies, contract management, construction management, underground construction, etc. NHPC is registered as a consultant in the area of hydro power with international funding agencies like World Bank, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, etc.
