Abstract
With its first-ever auction of the radio frequency spectrum for
Third Generation (3G) and Broadband Wireless Access (BWA), India is all
set for yet another giant leap into the digital world.
Description
Faster connectivity, a host of multimedia services including mobile broadband and high-speed data exchange will soon be a reality
in India as it kicked off the much-awaited multi-billion dollar spectrum
auction for 3G and BWA spectrum. It's quite well said that "It's better late
than never." After being postponed several times in the past several years due
to the dearth of spectrum as well as disagreements between the Defense
and the Communications Ministries, finally, the government decided to
kick-start the 3G auctions in April 2010 for the good of the Indian telecom sector.
The breakneck growth witnessed by the Indian telecom sector over the
past few years is a story that the world has seen with astonishment and a
new chapter would soon be added to this story as India makes yet another
giant Internet leap forward. While commercial usage of spectrum would only be
allowed from September 2010 onwards, a successful auction should lay
the groundwork for high-speed mobile services in the Indian cellular market.
