India Inc. is going global with big bang acquisitions. It has acquired companies all over the world in every sector. The first big bang acquisition was in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sector. It was Tata's acquisition of UK-based Tetley. Many Indian firms have acquired companies abroad in the FMCG and Fast Moving Consumer Durables (FMCD) sectors. Acquisition gives instant access to new products, markets, technologies, distribution network and well-established brands. Mergers and Acquisitions (M&As) play a vital role in implementing a firm's diversification and consolidation strategy.

When a company wants to diversify into a new business/industry, it can easily do so by acquiring a company in that industry. A company may also consolidate small units in the same business/industry to grow into a larger, stronger entity through mergers or multiple acquisitions.1 For many Indian companies, overseas acquisition in FMCG and FMCD sector is a part of their consolidation strategy at global level. This article highlights some of the acquisitions like Tata Tea's Tetley, Tata Coffee's Eight O'Clock Coffee, Godrej's Keyline Brands and Videocon's acquisition of CPT business of Thomson.
