Baby Boomer Generational Impact on Human Resources Theory

The baby boomer generation is beginning to exit the workforce as they reach retirement age. Human resources management is faced with a large workforce reduction and strategic initiatives need to be put into place to address this problem. This article reviews current studies and research performed on the baby boomer generational impact to human resource management and the current strategic theories and views that human resource leaders need to adopt in order to remain competitive in today's global marketplace. The review of literature covered in this article includes: multigenerational issues, diversity, employee attraction and retention, developing an organization, strategic alignment of human resources, and seeking a competitive advantage.

 
 
 

The focus of this article is on the baby boomer generational impact on human resources theory. The US Census from 2000 estimated that there were 82.8 million baby boomers that comprise the baby boomer generation. Yost (2008) defined the baby boomer generation as those born between 1946 and 1964. The baby boomer generation is beginning to exit the workforce as they reach retirement age. Human resources management is faced with a large workforce reduction and strategic initiatives need to be put into place to address this problem.

With the graying of the American workforce, the impact of this generational demographic will be experienced within the US and across the world. Freedman (2006) suggested that 64 million baby boomers will reach their retirement age by the year 2010. The size of this population will account for more than 40% of the US workforce. Demographics cause organizations to rethink the way they manage current employees as well as how they will manage future employees.

This article reviews current studies and research performed on the baby boomer generational impact on human resource management and the current strategic theories and views that human resource leaders need to follow in order to remain competitive in today's global marketplace.
