Organizations are on a hunt for people who are generally enthusiastic to come to work every day and are highly passionate about their work. There is a growing need of employees who are proud to be associated with an organization. A willingness to "go the extra mile" is what is required from today's employees. Having an emotional connection with the work enhances a level of involvement with the job, as well as adds to the success of any organization. This article focuses on the need for such employees and how their presence can improve the progress and work efficiency of the organization on the whole.

Engagement is all about having a psychological commitment towards the assigned task, which is clearly reflected in his/her dedication towards the work. Human capital can provide a competitive advantage to any organization. In today's highly competitive scenario, companies can achieve exemplary levels of performance only when employees exhibit unwavering commitment towards their tasks. There is a need for motivated employees who not only have greater concern to improve their process performance but are also less likely to be carried away by good offers from the competitive industry. A `satisfied' employee may not show that focused and energized attitude towards his/her work, as a `motivated' one may.

Higher productivity, reliability, higher self-motivation, confidence to express new ideas, organizational loyalty, less employee turnover, lower absenteeism and higher levels of customer approval and service quality are some of the characteristics of a wholly engaged employee. Striving to do the best they can for the organization, remaining committed and having a desire to continue working with them and always speaking positive about their employer is what an engaged employee is all about.

Engagement is a state where an individual is, not only intellectually committed, but also has a great emotional attachment with his/her job that goes above and beyond the call of duty, so as to further the interest of the company. It is the extent whereby, the employees of any organization put voluntary effort in their work areas, not only in the form of brain power but also in terms of extra time and energy. An engaged employee shows a lot of enthusiasm towards his work and is happy about his work and above all cares for the future of the organization. Such employees don't work for a 9 to 5 time slot allotted to them. Instead, they show complete involvement in the work they are assigned to, no matter how long they need to stretch their work timings. In today's highly competitive work environment, such engaged employees act as valuable assets, which ultimately lead to an increase in the business performance and lower staff turnover.
