Description
Russia has come a long way from its post-war days and has made significant progress in the economic and political fronts. Though many challenges still persist, the diplomatic and unconventional strategies adopted by successive governments are taking Russia to a new level of prosperity.
Russia's economic and political sys-tems remain far from perfect. But their defects are typical of countries at a sim-ilar level of economic development.
Russia celebrated its Victory Day this May 9 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Soviets' victory over Nazi Germany on the said date in the year 1945. It has been 60 long years since Germany attacked Russia (formerly the Soviet Union) and the country seems to be on its way to recovery from the aftermath of the World War II. However, its economic and political conditions still stand nowhere when compared to its days of glory. Once known as one of the greatest superpowers, Russia is now struggling to make its presence felt at the global level. Though the country is still rambling in search of a stable future, there has been a considerable progress, both economically and politi-cally. Consider this-Russia holds the world's largest gas reserves, estimated to be 47 trillion cubic meters and the eighth largest oil reserve estimated to be 69.1 billion barrels. The country's military research and development will always place it as one of the top producers and suppliers of military hardware around the world. The in-creasing capital accumulation and the increasing number of rich also add to its strength.
