This paper presents the capacity analysis of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) systems. The study incorporates soft handoff, with power control and without power control, voice activity factor, interference factor, and macro-diversity factor. The result includes the system capacity in users per cell overhead due to soft handoff and power control effects. The result includes the system capacity in users per cell overhead due to soft handoff and power control effects. Third generation (3G) cellular systems are identified as International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-2000 under the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) by the European Telecommunication standard Institute. The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) since its first commercialization in 1994, has been the fastest growing digital wireless technology. It has been adopted by more than 100 operators across 76 countries around the world (CDMA Development Group, 2008). The CDMA exhibits its greatest advantage over the Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) in the terrestrial digital cellular systems.

The isolation among cells is provided here by path loss, which in the terrestrial UHF propagation typically increases with the fourth power of the distance. Different frequency allocation is to be provided for contiguous cells in case of conventional techniques, but in the case of CDMA, we can reuse the entire spectrum for all cells, hence the capacity can be increased by a large percentage due to this frequency reuse factor. This technology can offer capacity which is about 7-10 times of analog and up to six times of digital (Ravi, 1994; and Garg, 2000).
