Organizations should invest money, time, effort and other resources to impart more skills and provide training and development to their manpower making it a rich human capital. This article discusses some of the important areas in which training needs of the human resources are to be met in today's global business scenario. It also brings to the fore the new challenges faced by the organizations and opportunities available to them for upgradation of skills and imparting training to make their human capital effective.

Importance of developing people can be highlighted from a Chinese saying, "If you wish to plan for a year, sow seeds; if you wish to plan for 10 years, plant trees, if you wish to plan for a lifetime, develop people." Growth rate of any organization is likely to be limited (or enhanced) more by its people than by any other factor.

Today, in the global economy, most organizations operate in a business environment of uncertainty, risk and complexity. Pressures of international competition are forcing all organizations to match global standards. With increased emphasis on technology, quality and service, the companies are moving away from a mechanized workforce to an intellectualized one.

Hence, there is an enhanced need for competent and self-directed employees to be effective in their jobs and roles. Such a transformation is possible only through an effective training and development program.Human capital is the know-how, capabilities, knowledge, skills and expertise of the employees of the organization, who can be put into productive use.If we scan the list of `best organizations to work for', we will find that there is a high level of commitment of the top level management for upgradation of skills and having training and development activities for its workforce. Highly performing organizations have decent levels of investment (not expenditure) for training and development activities.
