The present Indian job market is thriving and offering better jobs, in quantitative as well as qualitative terms, in comparison to the past era. Various new sectors have emerged with enormous job potential not only in the Indian economy but also globally. Today, opportunities abound for deserving candidates. Recent reports state that though there is a situation of unemployment in our economy, the unsuitability of the candidates for the available vacancies is the main complaint of many employers. This article differentiates between unemployment and unemployability and suggests measures to enhance employability.

Hordes of degree holders wait in queues for employment. Thousands of applications are received in response to a single vacancy. In general, it is being observed that there are many chances that one does not get employment even after acquiring a professional qualification. Even applicants passing out with distinction are being simply rejected. Though the facts do state that there is unemployment and underemployment, one strong reason is the unemployability of the candidates. Rejection rate has increased at each stage of the selection process. Mere eligibility is not serving any purpose and candidates are failing to get employment even after acquiring professional qualifications. Employers are finding it difficult to get the right candidate. There is mismatch between the type of candidates required and what are actually available. A considerable portion of the population is unemployed because the candidates are, though degree holders, otherwise unemployable. They are eligible to apply but unable to get employment. Basically, the applicants are unemployable because they lack knowledge, basic soft skills, general technical skills, values, etc. In order to enhance employability, it is necessary to gather knowledge, acquire and practice basic soft skills and general technical skills, and develop a strong value system.

Unemployment is the situation of not being gainfully employed in any productive activity. It is a situation where the eligible person is not able to procure any productive job for himself, in order to earn his livelihood. It excludes voluntary unemployment; say, of retired or old or wealthy people. In general, unemployment results from a lack of effective demand of human resources. Unemployment is a colossal wastage of human resources, as the resources remain unutilized.
