Business etiquette is getting more and more relevant as businesses are spreading across nations. Proper behavior coupled with polite and effective communication skills, and a pleasant disposition aid a manager in being successful. Though most of it might be what we had learnt back at kindergarten, how many of us can actually recollect enough to practice it today? We have different ideas and different work, but when you come right down to it, there is just one thing we have to deal with throughout the organizationthat is the man

People are a key factor both in our social and business environment. Success shall always remain elusive, unless we know how to handle people around us. Etiquette, as per the Oxford dictionary, is the code of polite behavior in a society. In other words, it is nothing but a way of presenting ourselves to others so as to be taken cognizance of. A good manner-as per the Bible is the best letter of recommendation among strangers. In the armed forces, officers are always expected to be gentlemen first and officers or leaders next. Similarly, in a business situation, business etiquette or business-like behavior assumes importance, and scores over the rest, when all things are equal. If technical competence is the lifeline of business, behavioral competence adds spice to it. This deals with how a manager interacts with those around him in establishing and maintaining relationships, on a long-term basis. Simply saying, business etiquette or behavioral competence is all about establishing a common comfort zone for us and for others too. Job competence of a manager may impress people, but it rarely inspires them. Proper business behavior sparks energy and enthusiasm in the people around us. Sadly, not many managers understand this vital fact of business life and tend to carry on with their positional authority. Even customer satisfaction and organizational success are driven to a large extent by proper managerial behavior and the corresponding climate created by that behavior. Thus, business etiquette is also seen as a critical competitive edge.
