It Happened in India is the autobiography of Kishore Biyani, the man behind the retail revolution in India (Big Bazaar, Pantaloons, Central et al). The book also provides an insight into the Indian retail market and the mind of the Indian consumer.

It Happened in India—The story of Pantaloons, Big Bazaar, Central and the Great Indian Consumer is a personal account of the growth of the entrepreneur Kishore Biyani. In his book KB (as Kishore Biyani is popularly known) describes his journey from an introverted child from a middle-class Rajasthani family to becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs in India. His story of how he built his empire from scratch is truly inspiring and motivates the readers at some point or other to defy norms, take risks and do something extraordinary. The book reflects KB's ideology, attitude and philosophy towards business and life. KB believes in gaining trust by trusting others. True to his ideology, Kishore Biyani has included in the book all the people (right from company heads to store managers) who are associated with him and have helped him to turn his dreams into reality. He has included their versions and insights in all the chapters, which has made the book even more interesting.

Reading the book, it is clear that few people understand the Indian consumer and the Indian market better than Kishore Biyani. Even as late as a few years ago, middle-class Indians associated organized retail with swanky floors, bright lights, tip-top salesmen and high priced items. Kishore Biyani changed all this by designing Big Bazaar in a traditional "mandi" format to make the Indian middle class more comfortable with organized retailing. He dared to do this because of his deep understanding of the Indian consumer. While most of his managers favored salesmen with ties in Big Bazaar, Kishore Biyani wanted the salesmen to look more humble, so that they did not intimidate the customers.
