Too many of the emerging graduates come from the management stream, and it comes as a big surprise to them when they do not get employment in spite of their impressive resumes. This is the bitter reality of the market that an average candidate is selected over a candidate scoring 80-90% marks. The fact is that other personal traits and behavioral attributes, known as soft skills, help in securing and sustaining any job.

It is a fact that there is unemployment due to unemployability. One major reason of unemployability is the lack of soft skills in the otherwise eligible candidates. As a computer system is a combination of hardware and software, so are human beings. Soft skills can be analogically compared to the software. Soft skills are behavioral attributes such as personal traits, language ability, and personal habits which complement the core skills required for any job. Soft skills are not a part of standard qualifications, but are desired requisites for most of the jobs today. Soft skills are emerging as equally important as the core skills required for any job today irrespective of the industry or type of job. The importance of soft skills is clearly visible when it is seen that a candidate, average in studies, is selected for a better job or achieves success faster in life in comparison to a candidate securing distinction. There is difference in their confidence level, communication and interpersonal skills and a few other personality traits and habits that employers generally look for in their prospective employees.

Nowadays, soft skills have become the crux for eligible candidates applying for any job. The difference between all eligible individuals is the degree to which they possess various soft skills. These skills help in creating a lasting impression and go a long way in achieving success in life. Soft skills are proving as the cutting edge in the present day, cut-throat world. Soft skills have become a necessity for jobseekers as employers have started paying attention to this aspect. Employers do opine that technical skills can be imparted through training while it is difficult to provide training for soft skills, as acquisition of soft skills is a long-term and continuous process. It is not possible to provide on-the-job training for soft skills and acquisition of soft skills requires sincere efforts on the part of the jobseekers or the employees themselves.
