There is a universal truth in the concept of
augmenting the likeability quotient among
human beings. The variables constantly at work in enhancing the same are our overt
and covert behaviors, which are constantly playing
a major role in our personal and professional
lives. It is, therefore, very important to prolong
and sharpen such skills of impression management tactics and rapport building which can be used
to our advantage. If impression management tactics can be mastered, it will significantly affect
our career growth. So, we can confidently deviate
from the famous saying, "The first impression is the
last impression" and tread the path of "The
lasting impression", where there has to be a
conscious effort to build likeness and alignment of
the thought process in order to be successful in
one's career. This can be honorably achieved in
tandem with hard work, performance, efficiency,
team play and a holistic approach to impression management and rapport building.
Suppose in a job interview, you impressed everyone with your knowledge, skills and
attitude and bagged the job. Then after a year, the tempo
of keeping up with the good work dwindled. Then the question arose what went wrong with the
past glory and the reasons for its diminishing. It was
a thorough introspection, which brought to light that it was not performance, not team work,
not overt behavior which was quite significantly up
to the mark, but some other underlying understated behavior variables that are at play when we are
at the workplace.
So besides giving the best shot at the performance per se, we definitely should take
care to work at our best on other parameters also. Whether it is a fad or not, impression
management is busy at work all the while which directly
or indirectly exhibit subtle behaviors like the way
we dress, speak or make an effort to impress teammates and superiors in the
organization. Rapport is eventually the instrument
for influencing/determining consequence with other people and sustaining growth in an
organization. The ability to establish rapport is an
important skill a person should develop. So, developing
the right rapport with the right people is an art and
if this art can be mastered, it can fulfill the need
of one another and a `win-win' situation can be achieved in an organization. |
