B-Schools need to understand the changing role of HR in the present-day economy and train the students accordingly to update their skills.

Most of the B-Schools (Tier-II primarily), have been facing tough times in placing HR specialization students, whereas placement of those having marketing and finance specialization is relatively easy across B-Schools. The reason is multi-pronged. Most of the companies look for HR with minimum 1-2 years of experience. Top-notch companies go to Tier-I B-Schools for HR recruitment. Because of computerization, e-HRM has taken over most of the HR functions whether it is, performance evaluation, insurance coverage or recruitment. This development has substantially reduced the demand for students with HR specialization. Number of students opting for HR specialization has substantially reduced. This is mostly true in the case of girls.

Earlier, HR was considered as a support department and a cost center. But, now, HR has become a strategic department and plays a critical role in a company's growth path - whether it is recruiting talented competent candidates, training them or providing a better workplace for them. But, the age-old concept of considering HR departments as a cost center still exists at a very low-intensity level in the corporate sector. Whenever a company faces any financial trouble, the HR department is the first victim. Even, when we talk so much about credibility and role of HR department, most of the companies are having shortage of manpower in the HR department. This scenario is very common in SME. The author has first-hand experience in dealing with HR representatives of companies during campus placement. The scenario is different for MNC and large companies.

In the SME sector, companies tending to avoid recruiting MBAs to avoid the cost burden. Many people without MBA degree also are working in HR department and doing extremely well. HR is such a function, one get mastery only through experience over the years.

Big time companies prefer to go for campus recruitment to reputed (Tier-I) B- Schools, like IIMs, XLRI, etc.

The growth of placement consultancy services and specialized HR services companies have opened up a plethora of opportunities for MBA (HR) specialization students. But again, they are paying very less like Rs. 5-8 thousand salary per month. Freshers need to work for at least 2-3 years before they get better opportunities.
