For a company that began its jour-
ney in 1945 assembling Willys
Jeep in India, the Mahindra Group has come a long way.
Today, Mahindra is a $7.1 bn Indian multinational, employing over 100,000
people across the globe, enjoying a leadership position in utility vehicles and
light commercial vehicles, besides a growing presence in a host of sectors,
including two-wheelers, farm equipment, automotive components, financial
services, trade, retail, logistics, tourism,
leisure boating, infrastructure development, information technology, and
information security. One of the top 10 industrial houses in India, Mahindra is
the only Indian company to figure in the list of top tractor brands in the world,
besides a significant presence in almost every segment of the automotive
industry, from two-wheelers to commercial vehicles (CVs), utility vehicles
(UVs), sports utility vehicles (SUVs), and sedans.
In fact, it is the core automotive sector of the group that continues to
remain its growth engine, despite the company having its fingers in several pies.
In 2009-10, the Mahindra Group's consolidated net turnover stood at
Rs 31,569 cr, a growth of about 18% over the 2008-09 figure of Rs 26,756
cr. Of this, tractors and automobiles contributed Rs 18,602 cr, or nearly
60%. Consolidated profits before tax in the year to March 2010 were around
Rs 4,030 cr, of which nearly 62%, or Rs 2,487 cr, came from the auto and
tractor businesses.
