The study of Emotional Intelligence (EI) has become the need of the hour. With EI one can recognize different emotional states and develop sensitivity. It helps in assessing the effect of emotions on behavior and identifying the best emotional state which helps to manage specific situations. In today's competitive world as jobs are becoming intellectual and the world is coming closer, understanding others emotions and feelings has become very essential. Higher EI improves individual, group and organizational performance.

Every human being has emotions. One's behavior, decisions and performance is always influenced by his/her emotions. Emotions build ones personality.

'Intelligence' is always referred to mental ability or IQ. When we say a child is intelligent, what does it mean? The child's IQ/mental ability is good or the child is brainy and bright. Intelligence brings success in life. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the key that relates well to others and helps in achieving our goal. Nowadays, many companies test EI while hiring new staff.

EI makes one sensitive about his/her actions and feelings and how it affects the people around him. It means the person values others, listens to their needs and wants and has empathy.

According to Daniel Goleman, "Emotional intelligence refers to the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and in our relationship." With EI, a man can express his feelings in an organized way, understand his and others emotions/feelings in a better way and can have better control on situations. With EI people can be self-motivated and can motivate others in a better way.

Man is a social animal, he lives in a group. To live in a group, he must be self-aware and self-motivated as well as he must understand others feelings and motivation. Man is considered as an intelligent animal because he expresses his feelings intelligently i.e., considering the surrounding situation. He can understand the implications of his behavior on others. As he is a part of group, he understands each others social needs and tries to get social acceptance. Every person has EI, just he has to realize that he is using it appropriately.
