The subject of environment has been under discussion for the last two decades. However, no systematic development has been made to incorporate these environmental issues in the developed world. This article attempts to highlight the critical ecological issues in developing countries like India, over pumping water, degradation of costal areas and exploitation of natural resources due to globalization.

Environmental pollution is a newly emerged phenomenon which has become a threat to the very existence of mankind. The subject has become a matter of concern not only for a few individuals but also for the entire global community. The environmental concern is being expressed in the fields of politics, administration, academics and scientific pursuits to examine the various issues. The subject of environment has been under discussion for the last two decades, although no systematic development has been made to incorporate these environmental issues in the developed world. The Rio declaration on Environment and Development at UNED in 1992 provided a platform for ecologically sound, socially just and economically equitable development. The world is overly keen to replicate western growth models without seriously exploring alternative and sustainable ways to better living.

Globalization without adequate strengthening of the domestic economy can bring disaster and a compromise with the terms and conditions that will endanger third world sovereignty. In reality, Globalization is not worthwhile, because a very small percentage of the people benefit from it. We can take a look at the painful events Mexico experienced due to its global integration. As a result, wages declined for two decades from 25 to 40%. There was an increase in contract employment, fallen domestic investment and finally the economy got under the control of the MNCs. Agriculture has suffered a big blow, as it is unable to compete with the highly subsidized US agricultural products, there has been a huge displacement of people to neighboring countries. The plight of the crumbling Asian Tigers cannot be forgotten so soon. The same thing is going to be seen in Indian economy also. Competition is a slogan coined by the proponents of globalization. But in reality it is not competition but Monopolies and Oligopolies that are thriving. When the MNCs enter the domestic market, they are like big sharks swallowing the small fish that come their way. According to Alwyn D Souza " Globalization is the rule of some super-state institutions mostly corporate groups, also multinational or transnational corporations who ensure their own commercial interests and profits. They achieve this by circumventing the control of the people of third world countries.
