The Indian animation industry has come a long way from being a medium of entertainment for children to a wholesome family entertainer and is in the process of emerging as a global animation hub.

The Indian animation industry is witnessing boom time going by the global entertainment giants Disney, Sony, Imax and others who are increasingly outsourcing cartoons and special effects from India. Even other companies are targeting India for their commercial and computer games animation. India possesses the necessary skill-sets including low-cost, English-speaking workforce, talented technicians and the expertise to provide quality animation content, which can compete with international studios and digital animation production houses. Animations made by Crest are shown on international TV networks. To its credit, Indian-made Crest has won a Bafta award and received an Annie nomination for the best animation TV production for children. In fact, the Indian industry is coming of age in the international arena and is in the process of emerging as a global animation hub.

According to a study done by The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), the Indian animation and gaming industry is projected to reach the $1 bn mark by 2010 from the present combined revenues of $402 mn, contributed largely by huge domestic demand for animated content and online/mobile gaming. The global animation market is estimated at $59 bn in 2006 while the gaming industry is recorded at $21 bn. The study predicts that gaming is poised to witness a 72% Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) to touch the $424 mn mark by 2010, while animation is projected to grow at 25% CAGR from current revenues of $354 mn. In the coming years, the industry is expected to receive around $2 bn worth of business.
