Though many of the Indian Business Schools (B-Schools) have sought to replicate the US-based models, they are facing an uphill task to reach the levels of quality. It would be fruitful, if we investigated the challenges for enhancing the quality of management education in India. The article assesses the quality of management education by analyzing academic issues, intellectual issues, physical infrastructure, industry interface, output issues and stakeholder issues and the input-output process of the B-School education system.

 
 
 

The history of management education is about half a century old. In these 50 years, the evolution has been lopsided. India records an annual output of about 1,20,000 graduates in business education every year. The Indian Government has liberalized the business education market since 1990s, resulting in to a rapid growth of business schools offering programs at both undergraduate as well as graduate levels. Many of the schools under private management are using business models rather than educational models. Indian business schools have sought to replicate the US-based organizational, pedagogical curricula, industry-interface, and academic research models. In spite of such duplication, many of the schools are facing an uphill task to reach the levels of quality. They are also struggling to introduce several adaptations because of the differences in the working system. So B-Schools are facing many challenges in enhancing the quality of business education in India.

A minimum of 1,200 contact hours for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program, in addition to 6-8 weeks of summer internship and field projects, divided over two years for the full-time format; and three years for the part-time and distance learning formats. The applicants should be admitted basing on a national or regional level written test to assess their aptitude and preparedness for learning management, performance in group discussion and interview; behavioral and personality trait tests for professional aptitudes; and prior academic record and work experience.
