Abstract
Multiplex theatres have completely transformed the cinema viewing experience in urban India by ushering in
a more comfortable environment together with add-ons such as modern eateries and shopping facilities. They
have also altered the economics of the Indian film industry by ensuring greater flexibility and reduced risks by making
it viable to screen even low budget films. Bollywood and multiplex have now become two sides of the
entertainment coin which have to work in tandem with one another to further the growth and well-being of the Indian
film entertainment industry.
Description
Indians have always rated cinema
viewing as one of the most popular pastimes. Bollywood (the Hindi film industry in India
centered around Bombay, now Mumbai) has provided cinema entertainment
for generations of Indian viewers. The dream merchants of Mumbai
have been captivating the Indian minds quite successfully. The industry
has gone through various phasesfrom the era of silent movies to black
and white movies and further on to the world of color movies.
India is the largest film producing country in the world in terms of
the number of films produced and screened every year.
Approximately 1000 films are produced each year in India. About two thirds of the
Indian film industry's revenue is contributed by domestic and overseas box
office sales. When compared with the US, where only 35% of the revenue
comes from the box office, this figure is substantial and reflects the influence
of Bollywood on Indian minds.
