Everyone suffers from stress, but learning certain skills to manage stress enables them to function more effectively. Coping with stress enables us to develop our ability to use our energy more efficiently, take on responsibilities we never thought we could and discover talents we never thought we possessed. The study determines the relationship between personality types and stress management/stress resistance ability and the ways to cope with stressful situations. The study was conducted among the employees of the Projects and Maintenance (P&M) department of BHEL: The employees included both executives and non-executives. The findings were beneficial for the organization to locate the various sources of stress, chalk out various strategies for employees to cope with stress, and take remedial measures to create a stress-free environment in the organization.

Completing a project on time, preparing a complicated report, taking a final examination, and giving a formal speech, are some situations where an individual may find himself/herself under stress. Many behavioral experts agree that stress is an individual's response to a physical, psychological or emotional stimulus.

Factors such as increasing competition, corporate restructuring and downsizing have compelled employees to work for longer hours to meet deadlines. Organizations also try to generate more output from fewer employees in a shorter span of time. This trend pressurizes employees, leading to negative consequences such as burnout, high turnover, aggression and stress. Work stress has become the latest corporate catchword and is a reason for genuine concern. Forbes magazine estimates that the American industry will lose $300 bn per annum due to absenteeism, health costs and stress management program. Some of the symptoms of stress are headaches, obesity, insomnia and depression. These symptoms have an effect on employee performance.

No human being can function without stimulation and challenge. It is a part of life and provides excitement, impetus and motivation, as well as distress and anxiety. As long as we are in control, challenges can be invigorating. However, with some of the challenges we meet nowadays, the more disabling feelings and actions associated with stress can take hold.
