Ability in Employees
-- Susan
Chirayath
Everyone suffers from stress, but learning certain skills
to manage stress enables them to function more effectively.
Coping with stress enables us to develop our ability to use
our energy more efficiently, take on responsibilities we never
thought we could and discover talents we never thought we
possessed. The study determines the relationship between personality
types and stress management/stress resistance ability and
the ways to cope with stressful situations. The study was
conducted among the employees of the Projects and Maintenance
(P&M) department of BHEL: The employees included both
executives and non-executives. The findings were beneficial
for the organization to locate the various sources of stress,
chalk out various strategies for employees to cope with stress,
and take remedial measures to create a stress-free environment
in the organization.

From
Bazaars to Negotiation: Techniques and Tactics
--
Patrick Low Kim Cheng
'Bazaar'
is an Asian form of market-an ancient concept that existed
centuries ago. In this study, a survey was performed wherein
the bazaar-goers were interviewed and their responses and
views were recorded. Taking the role of an apprentice, the
author has highlighted the negotiation techniques and tactics
that can be learnt from the bazaar-bazaar-sellers and -buyers,
alike. According to the author, people in those countries
where much of the daily life involves negotiation, often have
a much healthier perspective. True, there's much bargaining,
raising voices, even arguing or arms waving; but they take
it easy, and negotiating parties even manage to have some
fun. Overall then, if one wants to be an effective negotiator,
one should relate well, and also, learn to be a keen observer.

Determinants of Business Schools Selection by Final Year
Engineering Students: An Exploratory Study
-- Saptarshi
Purkayastha
A
number of business schools have flourished in the country
in recent times. The aim of this paper is to determine the
various factors that a final year engineering student would
like to consider in order to decide on a business school for
higher education. A questionnaire survey of 101 final year
engineering students in three engineering colleges of Hyderabad
was conducted. The factors found to be important were: Placements,
academic facilities, personal comfort zone, reputation, and
image. Further, a cluster analysis was performed to divide
the respondents on the basis of demographic profiles. This
analysis revealed that the respondents could be divided into
clusters where differences could be observed between income,
family size, place of residence and sex. The cluster analysis
would also help business schools to target specific customer
segments.

Smart Societies: Smart Skyscrapers
--
Raghu Guda and Neeraja Guda
The
urban sprawl and the rise of knowledge-based economy have
added a new dimension to the commercial and semi-commercial
space requirements. Unlike the era of the 1970s and 1980s,
where tall buildings were the trademark of very wealthy nations,
skyscrapers have become a necessary reality to accommodate
the growing demands of booming economies around the world.
Advancements in building technology are allowing architects,
engineers and builders to go beyond the traditional bounds
to create architectural masterpieces. Various technological
advances that can create and manage smart skyscrapers, which
are fast becoming major components of smart societies are
explored in the study.

Offshore Software Development Strategies of an Indian Vendor:
A Study
-- Anuradha
Mathrani,
David Parsons and Dennis Viehland
Based
on the maturing information and communication technologies,
offshore development of software applications by vendor organizations
is a new trend for reshaping the IT strategy across the globe.
Firms in their respective countries and industry associations
are vying with each other to provide outsourcing services
globally. These emerging aspirant producers of global softwares
face new challenges, as offshore software development processes
are knowledge intensive. They are further aggravated by the
intense global competition, and warrant awareness of clients'
risks and apprehensions in the outsourcing process. The author
studies the various experiences related to the work practices
of a medium-sized Indian software provider organization, having
an onsite presence in the client country of New Zealand. The
data of the study reveals the work practices associated with
risk factors that are considered more important for successful
implementation of software applications by the supplier organization-based
on its past experiences. The analysis indicates that the vendor's
success stories were based on a combination of strategies,
which include optimizing economic benefits, implementing relationship
management, and the use of integrated groupware solutions,
all combined with an aggressive marketing temperament.

Research
Summary
Shows Promise. But Must Try Harder
Association
of economic growth with negative externalities is considered
to be detrimental towards welfare maximization, which is the
basic objective of development. To reverse such a trend, it
is necessary to overcome this impediment. It is through 'sustainable
development' that this mission can be fulfilled. In the United
Kingdom, the need to frame appropriate strategies for maintaining
sustainable development was conceived long ago. However, several
lacunae existed with those strategies, on account of which
a supervisory body, the Sustainable Development Commission,
was developed. Their comments on the progress of the governmental
actions in attaining sustainability and the deficiencies that
existed therein, were delivered to the public in the annual
report by the name of 'A Better Quality of Life'. A concise
note of this report, supplemented with comments from experts,
is presented in this research summary.
