Moser Baer India Ltd (MBIL) has earned the remarkable distinction of being the world's lowest cost producer of Compact Discs (CDs). It is also world's third largest optical media player and has more than 10% market share of the global optical media market. In the global Compact Disc-Recordable (CD-R) market, MBIL ranks only behind the Taiwanese giants RICTEC and CMC Magnetics. MBIL also features among the top six manufacturers who control 85% of the global optical media markets. In the domestic optical media market, it has a 45% market share. MBIL's sales grew from Rs. 334 cr in 2000-01 to Rs. 1,070 cr in 2002-03 while its net profits increased from Rs. 139 cr to Rs. 245 cr. This is an incredible achievement for a company that had been virtually written off in the mid-1990s.
MBIL supplies products to eight of the top ten global companies and is an OEM supplier for international brands such as BASF, Nashua, Boeder, Dataright and WH Smith. Its famous brands are Xydan, MMore, Prostore, MB Media and BASF. Barring BASF, the rest are all international brands. Recently, MBIL has entered into a major deal with US based data storage giant Imation Corp., to consolidate its position in the overseas market. MBIL follows stringent global standards set by the Orange Book1 (Part II) in manufacturing its products. In a country, where R&D efforts are at best marginal, MBIL invests about 3% of the revenues in R&D. At a time, when services have hogged the limelight MBIL has put its bets solidly in manufacturing.
