Singapore Women : Challenges Faced and Strategies to Improve Their Status

 Singapore women are playing a key role in the Island- Republic, where survival, business and economy are all intertwined. This is not to say the modern Singapore women executives are without any challenges. They need to be employed, productive and yet be fulfilling their homemaker roles. This article highlights the challenges they face and also suggests various strategies to advance their career.

 
 
 

Low’s (2002) study indicates the participation of women as one of Singapore’s 12 national values. Comparatively speaking, the study also shows thatthvalue of participation of women, though accepted, was seen in fact low on the list of priorities or values such as learning,achievement, governmentasupport and involvement and others. In that study too, it is assessed that this value of participation of women is seenas an antithesis to the Confucian values. Does this mean the breaking of the glass ceiling by Singapore womenfolk? Or that the glass ceiling still exists?

In Low’s (2006) further study, the value of women participation is accepted; all the respondents surveyed confirmed this, and Low’s (2006) researchreinforces his previous study. The Singapore women are getting more educated; in fact, they are now more confident. But since Low’s (2006) study, new challenges may have emerged, the strategies for Singapore women’s upward mobility need to be reviewed or adapted; and certainly, new waysneed to be examined. A pertinent case in point is the results of a recent survey done by Grant Thomson International in conjunction with the International Women’s Day: March 8, 2007. That survey shows that Manila (Philippines), Beijing (People’s Republic of China) and Kuala Lumpur(Malaysia) have the highest number of women in key positions. Interestingly, Asia has more women in senior management roles than Europe withPhilippines leading the corporate pack. Nearly 70% of businesses in Asian countries boast high-ranking women while just half of European businesses have women in top roles.
