The IUP Journal of Business Strategy

Focus

In the highly competitive world of business, companies are constantly trying to create sustainable advantages by building climate action leadership, protecting biodiversity, and shepherding sustainability. This involves actions like pretending to be a green company to boost the social image or using cheap and substandard raw materials to lower costs and increase profits. Some of these actionable methods are very radical, with some real potential to influence climate change in a negative way. The second paper, "Perceived Greenwashing and Sustainable Business Strategies: Understanding Organizational Roles in Addressing Environmental Issues" by Sumeet Jhamb and Rebecca Fiegl, discusses the effects and roles of organizations, corporations and governments in the circularization of the global economy and circular business models. The study suggests that without mutual cooperation, it will not be possible to achieve sustainable development goals and, therefore, perceived greenwashing will continue to a large extent. The authors are of the view that governments and organizations need to step up to stop the negative and harmful environmental issues and push for a better climate and healthier earth.

Business model representation is used for transferring strategic corporate information in the process of business model innovation. Most of the existing representations are descriptive, and the literature lacks a general representation separating business phenomena and supporting explanatory research. The third paper, "The Observable Business Model" by Ayoob Sadeghiani, is a conceptual paper that aims to fill the gap. The study uses Hall's Encoding-Decoding framework to find the challenging grounds of the current business model representations using empirical data. The analysis presented reveals how strategic information is encoded in the process of business model innovation and how the encoded information is decoded. Further, the study refines the concept of 'value' and introduces a Business Value Triad at the heart of an Observable Business Model. The new representation helps researchers in designing explanatory research, and guides practitioners to separate the realized business from the planned business in the process of venture building and/or business model innovation.

Effects of Covid-19 on Business and Financial Strategy of a Firm: Survey of Indian MSMEs
Amitabh S Dutta, Kishore G Kulkarni and Kun Peng Lai

This study uses a modified version of the questionnaire used in Zou et al. (2020) to survey a sample of privately held Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in India concerning the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on business performance, what the owner/managers of firms did to survive, and what they feel about how their company will navigate 2022. Our survey results show that firms not only faced tremendous challenges to recover from the unprecedented shock of economic distress, but they also did it mostly without much official financial help. The paper reviews the few available survey studies and analyzes the results of the survey conducted. One can deduce that the lack of assistance had a severe effect on the survival of such MSMEs.

Perceived Greenwashing and Sustainable Business Strategies: Understanding Organizational Roles in Addressing Environmental Issues
Sumeet Jhamb and Rebecca Fiegl

In their efforts to stay ahead of rivals, companies are trying to create sustainable competitive advantages in terms of building climate action leadership, protecting biodiversity, and shepherding sustainability. In general, this may involve actions like pretending to be a green company to boost the social image or using cheap and substandard raw materials to lower costs and increase profits. Some of these actionable methods are very radical, with some real potential to influence climate change in a negative way. Therefore, governments and organizations need to step up to stop the negative and harmful environmental issues and push for a better climate and healthier earth. The current study focuses on the effects and roles of organizations, corporations and governments in the circularization of the global economy and circular business models. The study suggests that without mutual cooperation, it will not be possible to achieve sustainable development goals and, therefore, perceived greenwashing will continue to a large extent. Hence, businesses worldwide should firmly and logically watch all their sustainable business strategies.

The Observable Business Model
Ayoob Sadeghiani

Business model representation is used for transferring strategic corporate information in the process of business model innovation. Most of the existing representations are descriptive, and the literature lacks a general representation separating business phenomena and supporting explanatory research. The conceptual paper aims to fill the gap and is based on literature review. The study also uses Hall's encodingdecoding framework to find the challenging grounds of the current business model representations using some empirical data. It found how strategic information is encoded in the process of business model innovation and how the encoded information is decoded. Then, the study refines the concept 'value' and introduces a Business Value Triad at the heart of an Observable Business Model. The new representation helps researchers with designing explanatory research, and guides practitioners to separate the realized business from the planned business in the process of venture building and/or business model innovation.
