Although vast research has been carried out on geopolymer concrete, still there is no well-established methodology for selecting the parameters such as molarity of NaOH solution, Na2SiO3 to NaOH ratio, alkali to binder ratio and curing methods. The paper aims at providing a basic idea of the effect of these parameters on the performance of geopolymer concrete.
An alternative material for cement is the need of the hour. The invention of geopolymer concrete fruitfully fulfilled this need. The present demand for cement leads to depletion of natural resources such as limestone, and production of cement also leads to emission of huge quantity of CO2, which is a serious global issue (Joseph, 1994). Therefore, this is the right time to search for sustainable alternatives for cement. Geopolymer is one of the best sustainable alternatives for OPC. Geopolymer concrete gained worldwide attention as it can be prepared using low cost alumina and silica-rich source materials such as fly ash, rice husk ash, red mud, metakaolin, etc. The disposal of fly ash has become a major concern, so using it as a construction material solves this issue.
