Abstract

The last decade witnessed an escalating growth in wireless devices. Because of the development of smart devices like mobiles, tablets and other data-intensive applications, wireless data traffic grows exponentially. In the present scenario and in the future, the wireless and fixed devices require high data throughput to support data-intensive applications such as video streaming to play online games, movies and real-time videos. The requirement of wireless throughput and number of wireless devices will be growing more in the near future. Moreover, the power consumption at Base Stations (BSs) is a growing concern for wireless communication systems. So the future wireless communication system has to fulfill the requirements of high throughput, less power consumption and serving many users simultaneously. To overcome the problems of increased data rates and power consumption at BSs, Large-Scale Multiuser Multiple Input Multiple Output (LS-MU-MIMO) is one of the solutions. LS-MIMO is new technology and has attracted considerable research attention recently. The paper provides information about theoretic concepts of MIMO starting from Single User MIMO (SU-MIMO) to LS-MU-MIMO. It also discusses the benefits, survey of precoding and detection techniques and research issues and analyzes the LS-MU-MIMO system in terms of spectrum and power efficiencies by varying antennas at BS.


Description

To meet the substantial demand for data traffic, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) communication system has attracted more attention since last decade because it does not require extra bandwidth and power transmitted (Mietzner et al., 2009). Recently, the demand for multimedia services has increased due to the development of new smart devices like smartphones, tablets, video streaming and their applications. To meet these demands, wireless communication systems have to increase the capacity and energy efficiency. Telecommunication industry has forecasted that load on wireless communication networks is increasing exponentially (Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, 2012-2017). This exponential growth of wireless data requires more spectrum resources, but the currently available spectrum is limited and costlier. Consequently, it becomes necessary to innovate and design new technologies that will meet the demands of exponential traffic growth of future generation wireless mobile communication systems. Currently, MIMO is the key element of 4G wireless systems like Long-Term Evolutions (LTE), LTE-Advanced and Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11n), Wi-Max (IEEE 802.16e) to fulfill demand for higher data rates as compared to the past generations of wireless communication systems (Astely et al., 2013; and Kishiyama et al., 2013). In just a decade, the data rates have increased by a factor of hundred from 3 Exabytes (EB) in year 2010 to 190 EB by end of 2018 and will increase up to 500 EB by 2020 (Andrews et al., 2014). This increase in data is due to the video data so far and new applications are expected to materialize by 2020 (Andrews et al., 2014). In future, not only the data rate will increase, but also the number of devices will increase with exponential rate by the time when 5G wireless communication comes into practice (Corson et al., 2010; Andrews et al., 2014; Cisco Visual Networking Index: Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update, 2015-2020; and FP7 European Project 318555 5G NOW). Therefore, it becomes necessary that new innovative technologies should be introduced that will be smart and efficient yet grounded into reality.
